Susan Morrison is a landscape designer and garden writer based in the Bay Area of Northern California.

Susan’s enthusiasm and love of design are key to her success as a designer –
she believes that the collaboration between an inspired homeowner and a professional designer ensures spectacular results for even the simplest of projects. Her designs have been featured in various publications, including the San Francisco Chronicle, Contra Costa Times, Fine Gardening and Cottages and Bungalows.

Recognizing that landscape design requires more than just plant selection, Susan maintains an ongoing commitment to education. She holds a certification in garden design from UC Berkeley extension and became a Bay Friendly Qualified Designer in 2008. She regularly attends classes through the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) and has received advanced training in a range of design specialties, including lighting design, firescaping and graphics techniques.

Susan holds a Bachelor of Arts from UC Santa Barbara and an MBA from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UC Riverside.

WRITER

Susan is the co-author of Garden Up! Smart Vertical Gardening for Small and Large Spaces, Vertical Gardening Book an Amazon “Best Books of 2011” selection. She is a regular contributor to Fine Gardening magazine, where she writes about design and plant selection.

As technology has created new ways for gardeners to share and learn from each other, Susan has embraced new publishing formats. Her ebook, Everyday Feng Shui A Plant Lover’s Guide to Garden Design (On Your Own Design), debuted as the number one bestseller in the garden design category on Amazon. In 2013, she published her first garden app with Sutro Media, Foolproof Plants for Small Gardens. (no longer available).

In addition to her own publications, Susan has written on design and plant selection for Fine Gardening  since 2009. She often provides quotes and insights to other industry publications, including The American Gardener and Garden Design.

 SPEAKER

A popular and in-demand speaker, Susan speaks frequently in Susan speaking NWFGS the Bay Area and across the country to garden clubs, botanical gardens and master gardener groups. Past Bay Area venues include the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show, the Ruth Bancroft Garden and the Naples Botanical Garden in Florida.

A nationally recognized expert on small-space design, she has spoken at garden shows and symposiums around the country on this topic, including the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, the Boise Flower and Garden Show and the Pro-Green Expo in Denver, as well as appearing as an expert guest on the groundbreaking television show Growing a Greener World on an episode devoted to small space gardening. COMMUNITY

Susan feels blessed to live in the beautiful and culturally diverse East Bay, and is an active member of the both the garden and professional design communities. A Contra Costa Master Gardener since 2004, she participates in a range of volunteer activities, including the popular library speaker series and the Great Tomato Sale held every spring, where Susan enjoys helping homeowners select the perfect edibles for their gardens.

She has lent her time to other non-profits as well such as St Vincent’s Children of Kibera and  The Gardens at Heather Farms. She also sits on the advisory committee for the Bay Friendly Coalition.

Within her professional community, Susan is a longtime member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers and was the Editor-in-Chief for the APLD magazine The Designer in 2014 and 2015.  She is also a member of the Garden Writer’s Association, and was a featured speaker at the 2011 symposium in Cleveland.
